If you look at David Kaemmer's approach to things lately, you're getting the best of both worlds in iRacing's upcoming(tm) tire model. One of the big problems was that there was just not enough data available to base a physical model off of; but having rectified that by measuring his own, he provided himself with data that basically nobody else has (and manufacturer's don't really care about). If you watch the recent video interviews with him at the open house, it's clear that he's developed a physical model that follows his measured data (which goes far beyond the limit!) essentially perfectly which is a relative breakthrough in the tiny little sim development industry. If you haven't already you should have a look at them he has some interesting things to say.

Approaching things the way you describe seems rather arduous and probably more like starting over for no reason than moving forward imo.

If Scawen had access to the right data, this process probably would've been done near the beginning of LFS. I'd bet it's very very hard to find the information he needs specfically. It has nothing do with with the cars and everything to do with the tires; the rest is (by comparison) preschool physics.

Mostly Newcastle Brown Ale? Newcastle throne would be cool, but probably a bit on the heavy side... I discovered a brewry in British Columbia that makes a mighty fine English Porter, so now I can have non sub-par beer brewed locally that doesn't cost $4 a can/bottle. It's called Okanagan Spring Brewery.

I'm curious to the fate of the throne was it the subject of malicious passionate violence (or perhaps just passion :icon23: ?) or did you cave in and (gasp) dispose of it yourself?

Quote from Bob Smith :Funny, my IM client says it last saw you 13 days ago.

Although I don't recall speaking to you on it for a very long time.

heh, I haven't even had it installed in ages.

Though I did check my hotmail email to see if a confirmation email went to spam somewhere but that was via Web Messenger. Perhaps that counts? edit: turns out my wife's MSN is saying the same thing, now I'm kinda curious heh...

Was good times talking to you and to Anton too, you guys are weird. You have a beer throne!

On the pharmaceutical thing... (because I have no idea about the rest, honestly)

I really believe there's a hell of a lot more going on there than meets the eye: the first reply has that all wrong; they don't profit for shit off of healthy people, use your head! The drug companies make dough when you "feel better" which has zero to do with whether or not you are actually 'healthy' or not. Pain killers are a very serious problem in and of themselves; I know a girl who was repeatedly put on Oxycontin for example (just an example) and it's basically destroyed her life. Yes that's one case, but you'll have a **** of a time convincing me that the ONLY motivation behind that type of practice is money. It's a well known, documented fact that (again, for example), here in Canada doctors are given bonus material for selling "x" amount of certain drugs in a year (read: free trips and whatnot). Pharmacy is massive, massive business and you're deluding yourself if you think anyone's best interest is at heart, just like any other business except that this one literally uses people's lives as poker chips.

edit: 3K after almost 7 years. The rest of you are spammers

It's only the absolute distance / geometry from the surface that matters, but that's creative thinking at least . Just because the value is negative in your example in the OP, doesn't matter.

Quote from ColeusRattus :I am actually working in PR, and I actually do think that the best PR is honesty. He said what's up, he said why he did certain things, and why he did NOT do certain things. Perfect PR IMHO.

Yes, that was perfect PR. He stated a whole bunch of actually very interesting things that were interesting to read, the basic summary of what he'd encountered for the previous months. What's so crappy about dispersing little tidbits like that here and there? He always says "he doesn't want to", and that's where the buck stops ultimately, but when taking 5 minutes to speak about things quelled this useless thread for some weeks, you'd think he'd be inclined to do that more often. But again, he's not, so all discussion is moot.

Quote :Also, I think that the seeimg lack of info actually generates a thrill in the community

Yes this thread is full of thrill!

Quote :The "lack" of info is also just a misconception by the community. We actually know all there is to know. We only get the feeling of lacking progress and/or information because Scawen isn't constantly repeating himself every few days. Honestly, what kind of insight would we gain if Scawen would post "still working on it" every week?

Well like I said if you look at his posts somewhere in the middle of this mess, he managed basically a full page post about working on the "same thing all this time" that turned out to be rather intersting. For having nothing to report, he said some very insightful things. You make it sound like he's been staring at the same formula for months doing nothing but thinking; I really doubt that's the case.

Ultimately like Tristan said he "owes" the forum nothing, I'll just never understand the attitude of ignoring people who are genuinely interested in your project of passion. Not that I have to understand it.

Quote from tristancliffe :If I was Scawen, I'd keep it unreleased for even longer (whilst adding further things of course) just to annoy the stupid people that think they're owed something, rather than release it and add the further stuff with patches. Just to be annoying.

Heh, either you're just taking the piss again or... you're proud of that for some bizarre reason.

Everyone's gotten what they've paid for, of course Scawen doesn't "owe" the community anything, any more than you "owe" someone a "thank you" in any situation where there is to be no further exchange of money & goods.

But the only people I know who would ignore you when you speak to them are pretty self important. Or maybe they're deaf, and then they only come across as self important even though they're probably a great person.

Quote from JazzOn :There is nothing to loose.

Great, that's the sense of entitlement on the "other" end I was talking about. A statement like that is only made on the premise that something is only worth doing if you can tie concrete dollars to it. I guess this is what happens when there's no competition in your market segment. The only superior product in this case costs more in comparison, enough that I wouldn't view them as market competition for LFS.

Quote from ColeusRattus :What does this situation have to do with customer service?
Scawen stated quite clearly what his goals are, what he's working on, and that he won't be posting aboput the progress until he met a milestone.

Honestly, a way better christmas present for this forum would be a (audio)guide on comprehensive reading for many people in this community.

You know though, I can see both sides of the fence here. In truth it has a lot to do with customer service, because a developer doesn't choose a playerbase, it's the other way around. You can observe the senses of entitlement in both directions here pretty easily.

If you create an audio guide on comprehensive reading, then maybe you could also create one called "Public Relations for Dummies".

3DVision is great too, that's what I use. iZ3D works with some other polarized monitor I think as well, I've never tried it but I'm not sure if it has the backing that nVidia (sort of) supports with 3D Vision. Both solutions offer the ability to do anaglyph like that.

LFS works very well in 3D.

It is starting to be a bummer that Scawen wants it to run on an abacus. If he scrapped that concept it would've been out ages ago (supposedly)

Not really an unknown reason at all..... it's historically the day of the week that patches and/or test patches have been released. Doesn't mean that that is a hard & fast rule though.

"Hard and fast" idiom to only be taken in context of course.

Well I don't disagree with you... Today's (iR) update was rather nice too. LFS began to stagnate a long time ago, I guess my point is it's nothing new under the sun for considerable time now... Certainly the inactivity of this 'thread' doesn't indicate anything more nefarious than does the fact that the iRacing thread has (some) excited people in it. There's nothing left to say, other than the vastly inane drivel that's been said (and resaid) dozens of times in a plethora of unimaginitive iterations.

Quote from TehPaws3D :Maybe people are coming to their senses? And not posting BS.. Or does it show LFS is declining?

Sigh, I think you know better than the latter part of that statement.

Just enjoy the fact that there isn't a contant stream of fresh BS for a change.

Heh, that's got to be the best "interview" about simracing tire modelling I've ever seen.

I've figured out what should happen here, in the best interest of everyone:

Dave should just offer Scawen a fat contract, and suck LFS into iRacing as well as combine their research and intellect. The LFS content would still be one time cost and support, and the iRacing content would still be subscription & purchased based. Thus, both sims would have a great tire model, low cost fictional content for those that want it, and higher cost RL content for those that want to officially compete. Best of both worlds combined IMO, more dough for everyone. Would be wicked.

Of course, I've had a few birthday drinks so that could be rubbish, but it seems like a good idea at the time.

Quote from dawesdust_12 :I did the same. Had a G25 preordered from them for months, release came, and it was always "We haven't gotten a shipment".. ordered somewhere else and had it in 2 days.

ROFL

I remember that. G25 issues, and much whining from you. That was good times, though I felt I got recompense by having Purolater pull away with my wheel when I couldn't answer the door due to being in a race.... I pulled the car over and ran to the door only to see the truck pulling away.

Quote from Shotglass :uh why would you still recommend a 460 at this price point now that the 6870 is out for pretty much the same sort of money?

Oh gee, only because it's a better card for less money or are you brainwashed by those red idiots too? How's ATi's 3D support going these days anyway? What's that? You say their multi-monitor support is rubbish as well? Oh gee, big surprise. /yawn.

*waits for Shot's gnashing teeth*
